What happens during my first physiotherapy appointment?
Your initial physiotherapy visit includes a detailed health history and evaluation of your injury, as well as surrounding joints or structures that may be contributing to your symptoms. Appointments typically last 40–60 minutes and include assessment, discussion of your goals and treatment plan, and hands-on treatment as appropriate.
What happens during my first massage therapy appointment?
Your initial massage therapy session includes a relevant health history and assessment. Massage therapy appointments are typically 60 minutes in duration.
Will I need to complete paperwork before my appointment?
Yes. Prior to your appointment, you will receive an email with a short intake form. This form allows us to screen for medical conditions, previous injuries, and surgeries that may affect your condition and treatment.
Do I need a referral to book physiotherapy or massage therapy?
No referral is required to book physiotherapy or massage therapy at Scotia Physiotherapy. If you have been referred by a physician or other healthcare provider, you are welcome to bring your referral to your appointment.
Is your clinic accessible, and are there stairs?
Please note that our building has stairs. If you have questions or concerns regarding accessibility, we encourage you to contact our clinic at 902-425-3065 prior to your appointment so we can discuss options.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Please wear comfortable clothing that allows examination and treatment of the area of concern. Shorts or an examination shirt (Johnny Shirt) are available if needed.
Masks are welcome at all times. At your request, our staff will also wear a mask during your appointment.
Where are you located, and is parking available?
Scotia Physiotherapy is centrally located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Information regarding free parking on and around Quinpool Road is available here
Does Scotia Physiotherapy direct bill insurance companies?
Yes. We direct bill most insurance companies for physiotherapy and massage therapy services.
Scotia Physiotherapy & Massage Therapy is also a Student VIP Preferred Provider.
Is physiotherapy covered by MSI in Nova Scotia?
Physiotherapy services provided in private clinics are not covered under the Nova Scotia provincial health plan (MSI). However, most private insurance plans provide coverage for physiotherapy, massage therapy, osteopathy, and dietitian services.
We recommend confirming coverage details with your insurance provider (e.g., Medavie Blue Cross, Sun Life, Canada Life, RWAM).
What payment methods do you accept?
Payment is required at each visit. Accepted payment methods include:

You will receive a detailed receipt that includes your therapist’s registration number, which can be submitted to your insurance provider for reimbursement if required.
What is your cancellation policy?
Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. We require 24 hours’ notice for appointment cancellations or changes. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, or missed appointments, will be subject to a $50 cancellation fee.
Is Scotia Physiotherapy a scent-free clinic?
Yes. Scotia Physiotherapy maintains a scent-free environment. Please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, scented deodorant, hairspray, aftershave, or other scented products. Scents can trigger migraines, nausea, or breathing difficulties for individuals with asthma, allergies, or environmental sensitivities.
Is my personal health information kept private?
Yes. All patient information is kept private and secure. We will request your written consent before contacting your physician or insurance provider if necessary. Without consent, we will not discuss your condition or treatment with any third party.
